Chip and Practice like a Pro

One of the greatest chipping drills ever shown to me was one by Hank Haney (Tiger Woods’ coach).

The simplicity in this is amazing: by taking out your entire lower body movement you create the greatest of movements with your arms, and learn to strike the ball with amazing consistency.

Set yourself up on a towel, aiming towards your intended target, and hold a short iron (8 or 9 iron) down the shaft so that the butt end sits to the left of your chest and under your left arm.  Make sure that your weight favours the front knee slightly.

By practicing your chip shots in this position a number of positive fundamentals are created. Your hands are pressed forward, a descending blow is encouraged, and lower body movement is eliminated during the stroke.

Through the stroke, the aim is to keep your hands in front of the club face and not to have the grip end of the club touch your body. If it does, your hands are collapsing through your stroke, a classic case of trying to scoop the ball in the air.

You need not practice this drill for too long, before you become accustomed to the way the hands and club should be traveling in your chipping stroke.

When you return to your full posture, try to recreate the feelings and sensations in your stroke that you felt whilst on your knees.
