Course Strategy - Take the Trouble out of Play

This week's play-off in the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews was a prime example of how important course strategy and sensible club selection are for all abilities, and particularly at the top level.

Robert Karlsson, Ross Fisher and Martin Kaymer were tied for the lead after regulation play and entered a playoff.  Fisher and Karlsson had the momentum having both finished with final rounds of 65.

The playoff started at the 1st hole a short par 4 measuring only 376 yards, with the famous Swilcan Burn waiting within range off the tee.  Fisher was drawn to tee off first and choose to use his driver.  Pulling the drive slightly, his ball reached the water, effectively ending his hopes of the title in one shot.

The other players chose shorter clubs to eliminate the danger of going in the water.  In his interview afterwards, Karlsson stated that the hole was a perfect 3 wood and gap wedge for him.  His easy birdie at that hole gave Karlsson the trophy.
