Fairway Bunkers |
| |
|
I remember reading an article in a golf magazine way back in 1988, by Sandy Lyle. In the article, he explained how he played his famous fairway bunker shot into the 18th at Augusta, setting up a birdie for victory in that year's US Masters. |

Those 6 principles are still how I play and teach the fairway bunker shot today:
- Your 1st priority is to get over the lip of the bunker. Make sure you allow enough loft so that a thinned shot will still get over. Sometimes you just have to take your punishment.
- Grip down the handle to compensate for your feet digging into the sand.
- Aim slightly left, visualise and feel a fade shot.
- Swing within yourself, feeling mainly an arms swing, to avoid your feet slipping.
- If you can get over the lip easily, take one more club than normal for the distance required.
- Finally, focus your eyes on the very top of the ball to promote a clean hit.
