The Art of Putting

The old adage about tournament golf; "You drive for show and you putt for dough" has never been more true.  The only thing that's changed is the amount of "dough" on offer.

Putting is the key aspect that determines each tournament winner.  A common trend is for players to turn putting into a science rather than the art that it is.  I constantly see players who are obsessed with their stroke, normally trying to keep it straight back and through.  This over-controlling mindset guarantees gerky actions, mishit shots and plenty of putts.

I remember my father's putting stroke. He sliced right across the ball with an out-to-in  stroke.  Despite this he had the best feel for distance that I’ve ever seen and out-putted me without fail.

Here are my 5 keys to great putting:

  1. Judging the speed or distance of the ball's roll is 99% of putting.
  2. Striking the sweetspot consistently is essential.
  3. Focus on holing every putt no matter the distance.
  4. Letting go of control will maximise your chances of success.
  5. Great putters accept missed putts, but believe they will sink the next.
