Rehydration

As the summer heat is now upon us, it is a good time to reaffirm the need to keep yourself hydrated during a round of golf for peak performance.

Here are my 5 golden rules:

Water constitutes 85% of your brain and 75% of your body. Therefore your body needs to be replenished by water.
Drink plenty of water when you wake up.  During sleep the body becomes dehydrated.
Dehydration will lead to a loss of concentration and poor decision making.  This will happen before you feel any physical effects.  If you feel thirsty it's too late, you should have drunk water earlier.
Sugary drinks may give you a short term boost, but 3 or 4 holes later you will lose more energy and feel worse. Drink water.
Energy drinks can actually dehydrate the body as it takes water to dilute high sugar drinks before they are absorbed in the body. Did I mention that you should drink water.

I got heatstroke a few years ago during a tournament in Botswana.  I was drinking 1 energy drink per hole thinking it would help.  I only drink water now.
